Wedding Wednesday // Our Dating Years
Y’all. 2014 feels like it was SO LONG ago. I am not sure if it is because 2020 has seemed to last 5 years itself, or what! When I think back on the past 6 years, it crazy how much Matthew and I have grown. Before I start sharing more of the wedding planning process and our wedding weekend, I wanted to give ya’ll a backstory on Matthew and I. At the end there are some pictures – everything from our first picture together, all the way until our last before we were engaged!
Where it all began: Our Freshmen year of college – I was at Meredith College and Matthew was at NC State. Matthew and I had been texting for a few weeks before we officially went on our first date. The day came – I specifically remember it was a Tuesday afternoon in the beginning of March. Matthew could probably tell you the exact date, haha! We had planned to go get Mexican food at a popular restaurant in town. It was POURING down rain. I wanted to impress him, but knew the rain was already going to ruin everything. He could still tell you what I was wearing that day but I cannot remember what he wore at all. I honestly think this was a sign from God from the very beginning that it was going to rain on our wedding day. I still look back on this and laugh.
I was getting nervous, then he texted me saying his truck battery had died. Ya’ll I just knew he was standing me up! I automatically looked at my roommate and said “I am not going, this is a sign.” He got a jump from some random stranger, (still feel like I should send this man a thank you note or a pie or something) and was only a few minutes late to pick me up in front of my dorm.
When I walked out, the rain had slacked off and he was standing outside of his truck. He immediately opened the truck door for me – brownie points already! I really cannot remember what we talked about on the way to the restaurant, but we got there and found our table. Once our food came to the table, Matthew said “I don’t know about you but I always say the blessing,” Ya’ll when I tell you my heart was in puddles. The only other thing I remember talking about was my shoes, lol. Because of the rain I had decided to wear my L.L. Bean duck boots. When I told them that’s what they’re called I am sure he thought I was an idiot. As he is an avid hunter, his idea of duck boots was completely different, ha!
After we ate, he took me back to campus. When I got out of the truck, we hugged and he said “maybe we can do this again sometime?” The rest is history!
I knew after our first date that he was either going to be the guy that showed me how I was supposed to be treated, or I was going to marry him. I’m glad both ended up happening!!
Opposites definitely attract! Matthew is allll country boy. One of the first things he said to me was that a girl would have to get him out of a deer stand to marry him, and that “nothing would com between him and hunting.” I guess I did an okay job 😉 I am definitely very girly. I’ve been hunting twice and he accepts I don’t like mornings, haha. I am the organized, write everything down, has to have a schedule, person. He’s more go with the flow. I’m the worrier. He keeps me calm. We are still very similar in all the important ways, but each have our own things to enjoy and do!
Our story is nothing extravagant, but it’s been perfect for us! Dating was sure a lot of fun, but marriage is even better than I thought it would be! He’ll always be my college sweetheart!
